China Produces More Energy From Coal Than Nearly Rest Of The World Combined

Measured by multiple sources, China produces more of its energy from coal than all of the rest of the world’s coal plants combined according to a variety of sources including the World Bank, various agencies of the United Nations and others.

Installed Coal Plant Capacity

Analyzing the global capacity for use of coal in energy production, China’s capacity to utilize coal to produce heat and electricity is unmatched with well over 50% of the world’s capacity despite only having approximately 17.8% of the world’s population as the country with the second largest economy and population globally.

While coal is usually one of the most intense large scale emitters of carbon, sulfates, nitrates, and other pollutants, each of the economies above also use significant amounts of other fuels, including carbon and non-carbon based. As an example, the United States of America, which has been surpassed by India in installed coal capacity far outproduces India when it comes to energy due to a diversified mix of natural gas, petroleum, nuclear, and other renewable sources.
