China Faces Population Challenges That Will See Workforce Fall By Up To Two-Thirds: Brookings

Chinese Working Age vs Total Population

While the globe faces fertility rate challenges nearly unprecedented in the last several hundred years, China is facing the stark reality of losing up to two-thirds of its work force between 2011 and the end of the current century according to an analysis from the Brookings Institute.

These challenges will increase economic shifts which are starting to be seen in the last two years as China has lost just under 2.85 million in total population and been surpassed by India as the most populous country in the world marking the first time China is not the world’s most populous nation in centuries.

The critical story of population shifts and the effect of dropping birthrates on the global future has been a focus of the Association of Western Employers since our founding. We will continue to keep you updated on this story.
