Link Not Ink: NY Times Approaches 10 Million Online Subscribers Almost 3X Wall Street Journal
The Press Gazette reports that as the market for paywalled online news providers grew to 39 million subscribers in 2023, the New York Times and its subsidiary site The Athletic accounted for over 1/3 the market on their own far outpacing the rest of their most likely competitors.
When combining the New York Times two paywalled sites, it combined for over 13.5 million of the total estimated 39 million subscribers accounted for by sites with more than 100,000 paying subscribers. As a company, the Times, which has faced newsroom cuts and other operational challenges, posted an increase of 13% in online advertising revenue for the year.
