Likelihood Of National Rail Strike Increases as Second Union Votes For Stoppage
CNBC reports that over 60% of the ballots cast in a strike vote by signalmen union members were for not ratifying a new contract. In anticipation of likely stoppages, despite negotiations with the White House and other key elected officials, freight shippers across the globe have shifted a record amount of freight from the west coast to the east coast and specifically the Ports of New York and New Jersey.
After being criticized widely during 2021 and the opening months of 2022 for being inflexible and filled with challenges, the supply chain is currently proving that once up and running the system is very dynamic and flexible to avoid disruption even despite rail and port stoppages.
