Demand For Rooftop Solar Installations In California Drop By 80% In 2023

Demand for rooftop solar on homes in California fell by 80% in 2023 following the California Public Utility Commission’s cutting by up to 75% the rate paid to homeowners who resell their excess capacity to California’s grid according to CalMatters.

With the state counting on rooftop solar to power roughly 50% of California’s electricity by 2045, the year it has set to achieve true carbon neutrality as a state, the rooftop solar industry is facing layoffs of up to 17,000 in 2024 due to the steep drop in demand.

In addition to replacing current carbon and nuclear based energy sources, California’s plans also call for a doubling of generation capacity by 2045 in order to achieve carbon neutrality so we will be tracking this story closely and will continue to report on it.
